OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) — The FBI on Thursday morning raided the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, located in the Oakland hills in California.
Federal agents were spotted Thursday at 80 Maiden Lane in Oakland, California, which records show is Thao’s residence.
The FBI's San Francisco office said in a statement Thursday that "The FBI conducted court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane in Oakland this morning. We are unable to provide additional information at this time."
Thao and her spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The FBI also searched another home in the Oakland Hills belonging to Andy Duong, a member of the family that owns Cal Waste Solutions — a recycling firm investigated for campaign contributions to Thao and other elected city officials — according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The operation takes place two days after Thao faced the news that Oakland voters will decide whether to recall her from office this November, not even two years into her mayoralty.
A recall organization blaming Thao for various issues — including firing the former police chief over misconduct within Oakland Police Department — said Tuesday that it has enough signatures to place on the ballot the question of whether to recall the mayor.
The Oakland City Clerk and Alameda County Registrar of Voters confirmed to news outlet Oaklandside that enough of the recall campaign’s 40,000 collected signatures qualified to meet the requirement of having 25,000 registered voters’ signatures to place a recall initiative on the November general election ballot.
Oakland seats Alameda County, whose District Attorney Pamela Price also took office in early 2023 and faces a recall of her own.
