Arizona Law Targets Immigrants

PHOENIX (CN) – In a party-line vote, Arizona House Republicans on Tuesday approved a bill that would make it a crime for “aliens” to willfully fail to carry immigration documents, and allow people to sue police departments if they think the police are hindering enforcement of immigration laws.     The bill contains other measures to punish immigrants, such as prohibiting people from “blocking traffic” if they hire workers, or seek work, on street corners.     The bill must be sent back the state Senate, which approved a different version of it in February. Then it will undoubtedly be challenged as unconstitutional, as immigration is a federal concern.     All 35 Republicans in the Arizona House voted for the bill, which passed 35-21.
