ST. LOUIS (CN) – Union Electric’s negligent operation of Taum Sauk Reservoir in Southeastern Missouri has affected the operation of another reservoir downstream, the Army Corps of Engineers claims in Federal Court. The Taum Sauk Reservoir suffered a catastrophic breach on Dec. 14, 2005, releasing millions of gallons of water and debris into surrounding areas. The breach caused an unknown amount of sediment and debris to flow into the Black River and Clearwater Lake, affecting Clearwater Dam, which is operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Army claims sedimentation released by the Taum Sauk breach has reduced Clearwater’s storage capacity and reduced the lifespan of the Clearwater project, damaging the Army by an undetermined amount. The Army seeks unspecified damages and is represented by Michael Price of Cape Girardeau.
