DA Won't Prosecute Public Smokers Yet

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – St. Clair County State’s Attorney Robert Haida says he will not prosecute violators of the state’s new smoking ban because the law, which took effect Jan. 1, does not state how it should be enforced or in what court cases should be heard. The law bans smoking in all public places, including bars, casinos and prisons. Haida asked lawmakers to clarify the law but advised smokers not to light up in public because they still could face prosecution or civil lawsuits.
