Emerald Hummingbird|May Be Endangered

WASHINGTON (CN) – The Honduran emerald hummingbird will be given a full status review under the Endangered Species Act to determine if it should be protected, according to proposed rule by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The agency’s action is in response to a petition by the Hummingbird Society of Sedona, Ariz.; the Hummingbird Conservancy of Butte, Mont.; and several other environmental advocacy organizations.      According to the petitioners, nearly 90 percent of the thorn habitat of the hummingbird has been lost to deforestation and urbanization in the rapidly developing Honduran states in which the hummingbird is endemic.
