'Equal' Manufacturer Files Chapter 11

WILMINGTON, Del. (CN) – Merisant Co., which makes the low-calorie sweetener Equal, has filed for bankruptcy, listing $561 million in debts – more than twice its annual income. The privately owned company based in Chicago listed $331 million in assets in its Chapter 11 filing. Merisant’s sales totaled $277 million in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, Moody’s Investors Service reported.
