MANHATTAN (CN) – Faisal Shahzad was denied bond Tuesday in his first court appearance on federal charges of trying to detonate a car bomb just off Times Square. Shahzad, 30, faces five felony charges, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, both of which carry life sentences. Prosecutors say Shahzad “has provided valuable intelligence” since his arrest on May 3 while aboard a plane awaiting takeoff to Dubai. The U.S. Attorney’s office said that the May 1 attempted bombing, for which the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility, is still under investigation.
