(CN) – Thomas Fitzgerald will serve as the new chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. Fitzgerald, a Democrat from Chicago, was chosen unanimously by his colleagues to replace Bob Thomas, a Republican from DuPage County. Thomas’ 3-year term ends in September. Fitzgerald has served as supervising judge of Cook County’s traffic court and was part of a Supreme Court committee on capital punishment before being elected to the court in 2000.
