CLAYTON, Mo. (CN) – A man contracted hepatitis C after receiving contaminated human tissue distributed by Medtronic, Regeneration Technologies and Biomedical Tissue Services, he claims in St. Louis County Court. Chris Fults says he was exposed to the tissue during back surgery at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center on Feb. 14, 2004. He claims the defendants distributed and sold illicitly procured human tissue from 2003 to 2005. Fults says the defendants failed to properly screen the tissue for infectious diseases, failed to confirm whether the tissue was gained with proper consent and failed to gain a correct medical history of the donor of the tissue material. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B can also be spread through the contaminated tissue. Fults seeks at least $1.5 million in punitive damages and is represented by Burton Newman of St. Louis.
