GREENBELT, Md. — A federal court in Maryland ruled in favor of Johns Hopkins University and the Rockefeller Foundation in a case brought against them relating to nonconsensual medical experiments about STDs that were conducted in the 1940s on individuals in Guatemala — including psychiatric patients, children in orphanages, and indigenous children. The court ruled evidence that defendants substantially assisted the Guatemala experiments with the intent of furthering such nonsconsensual experiments “has been lost to the sands of time,” but also noted that its power is limited, and the U.S. has handled similar injustices by compensating victims.
